Reading Time: 4 minutesHonestly January was a pretty slow month for games. Right after the holidays people were pretty tired and often times sick or too busy for game night. Sometimes that happens though. While I do my best to keep game nights weekly, I often want 2 other people than myself to be there, which means that if more than 2 people call out the same week, I generally choose to cancel.
Honestly January was a pretty slow month for games. Right after the holidays people were pretty tired and often times sick or too busy for game night. Sometimes that happens though. While I do my best to keep game nights weekly, I often want at least 2 other people than myself to be there, which means that if more than 2 people call out the same week, I generally choose to cancel.
I make dinner, host, set up, and read any new rules for the games being played that day, and often times it doesn’t feel worth it for only me and one other person. Plus I don’t really have a ton of free time so on the Friday’s where game night is cancelled, I try to make the most of it, by either writing these blogs, making content, updating the website, learning new editing techniques, and less be honest, every once in awhile, some doom scrolling just to escape the responsibilities of adulting.
Game night only happened two times in January 2026. Like I said people were sick and busy so it just wasn’t the biggest priority, that being said I was still excited to play my games I got for Christmas. If you’re interested to see what games I got for Christmas, you can check that out here!
This month we had game night on 1/9 and 1/23, meaning it was every other week this, month rather than weekly like I would like
On 1/9 it was just D, JC and I.
On 1/23 we had the full group of A, D, E, JC, MB and I.
| Name | Game Nights Attended | Games Played |
|---|---|---|
| A | 1 | 2 |
| D | 2 | 4 |
| E | 1 | 2 |
| JC | 2 | 4 |
| MB | 1 | 2 |
| N | 2 | 4 |
This month we only played 4 games, sadly none of which were games I got for Christmas…
On 1/9 D, JC and I were pretty tired so the game night was cut fairly short, but we played Hanabi and Fire Tower. Each game was only played once, but have been played multiple times in the past.

This game of Hanabi was actually my first perfect game (not including the 6th stack for rainbows). We have grown to learn if anyone has a 4 or 5 you tell them so they know not to discard that card. The game lasted about 40 minutes.
After Hanabi, we played Fire Tower, and I truly believe it may have been my longest game of Fire Tower yet.. D was out fairly quickly and I felt bad because he sat there for 20+ minutes, while JC and I just kept adding and removing fire, without really getting anywhere… JC did eventually win after 45 minutes though.

On 1/23 A, D, E, JC, MB and I, also only played two games. We played a game of Planted without D because he was working and then a game of Wyrmspan once he got off work.

To be honest I don’t remember much of this specific playthrough of Planted. This was one of the first games I added to my collection as an adult and I love the game. It’s simply light, and I absolutely the art. While it doesn’t see much play these days, I’m always happy to play a game or two.
This game is also one of my favorite games. I got it after two of my favorite youtubers (who don’t play board games on YouTube) shared a picture from their own game night of them playing it. I had been eyeing Wingspan for a while, and when I saw there was a dragon version I was sold. I even recently got the Dragon Academy Expansion, which we played in this session.

While Wyrmspan is only a 5 player game, my play group has played it so much and we know the board layout that we decided to stretch it to 6 people. While the game gook over 4 hours, we still enjoyed the session and I would honestly get one of the neoprene mats just to play with more people.
*At this point I wasn’t tracking each person’s rating, but rather just the average between players.*
The collective score for the 3 of us was 8/10.
The collective score for the 3 of us was 7.33/10.
The collective score for the 5 of us was 8.4/10.
The collective score for the 6 of us was 7.5/10.
Not including Co-op games I won 2 out of the 3 games played this month.
A, D, E, and MB didn’t win at all this month.
